At A Plus Security, we’re always investing in new training for our team, not only to deliver the best possible standards of care to our clients but to expand the services that we provide.

Recently, we’ve gained our accreditation to carry out fire door inspections. With changes to UK fire safety legislation coming into force this year, those responsible for any residential, commercial, or educational building will be required to review their fire safety precautions and procedures.

Why Fire Door checks should never be missed

As vital components to saving lives in the event of an emergency, fire doors are designed to withstand extreme heat and to act as a physical barrier to prevent the spread of flames. They keep escape routes accessible so occupants can reach safety and wait for help.

Regular checks ensure that the doors are operating properly and are fit for purpose to do their designated job in the event of a fire. These important checks deliver peace of mind, legal compliance, and most importantly, can save lives.

The new UK fire safety regulations were prompted by the Grenfell tragedy in 2017. Alongside the multitude of failings in the building’s design and infrastructure, one of the inquiries revealed that the fire doors were inadequate, due to a lack of inspection and maintenance. The inquiry noted that they did not act in the way that they should have, to prevent smoke and gases from spreading.

At A-Plus Security, we feel passionate and proud to now offer this new safety check to help prevent any such tragedy from happening again, as a result of malfunctioning systems and/or human negligence.

Who is responsible for organising a Fire Door inspection?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order places this obligation on the person responsible for the building – often the business owner, or building manager.

Only a competent and regulated inspection company should be ordered to carry out a fire door inspection.

How often should Fire Door checks be carried out?

As a guideline, the BS9999 recommends once every six months. However, the frequency can vary depending on the usage of the building.

The law requires:

  • Quarterly checks on doors in communal areas
  • Annual checks on flat entrance doors in buildings taller than 11 metres. Buildings subject to heavy traffic and wear and tear of doors, such as hospitals and schools should consider increasing the frequency of the checks

We advise our clients to include Fire Door Safety Inspections as an integral part of their maintenance plan with us, to ensure they comply with the new law and keep staff, visitors, patients and charges safe.

What our
clients have to
say about us

A Plus provides an excellent return on investment, not just through the solution installed, but the general experience they offer from pre-install to post-install and right through to the maintenance of the system. We knew we had made the right decision with A Plus as they offered a comprehensive and detailed proposal and project plan. The skill level of their engineers was a pleasant surprise with their knowledge of IT and networks, as well as electronic security, which made dealing with our internal IT team very smooth. Apart from that, the fact we never had to chase them for anything was a very nice surprise!

International Group of Schools

We chose A-Plus Security to carry out the upgrade of our electronic security systems for our 9 colleges and they have far exceeded our expectations in their approach to the projects. We are a UK wide organisation where the planning and mobilising of these major project around term times is time critical and A Plus Security have been nothing short of fantastic in the communication, there design proposals, openness to last minute changes, pre and post-sales support and their management of 3rd party companies and IT services. We would highly recommend A Plus Security to any organisation who are looking to install or upgrade their systems.

Nationwide Groups of Colleges

A Plus Security exceeded all expectations, following a late award of the contract due to a different contractor pulling out. All fire and security works were completed when requested and signed off on finish, with no issues noted. We have continued working with A Plus on following projects and would fully recommend them.
